Green Marine has successfully completed the installation of Microsoft’s Project Natick subsea data centre, dubbed Northern Isles, in Orkney. Green Marine were awarded the contract by Naval Energies for the final onshore assembly and marine operations required for the groundbreaking, innovative project through a competitive tender process. The scope of work awarded to Green Marine included all the engineering, onshore assembly and offshore operations required to transport and install the subsea datacentre using Green Marine’s vessels.

The in-house engineering team, management team and operations team completed the scope of work within the project schedule, safely, successfully and to budget.

Green Marine’s Managing Director, Jason Schofield said:

“This project showcases the full range of Green Marine’s capabilities, as we were able to support the client through final assembly and testing on the dockside, provision of engineering, analysis and planning services, and then utilise our specialist vessels and experienced crew to deliver a successful device deployment”

Naval Energies’ Marine Operations Engineer, Graziano Spano said:

“We were impressed by the speed at which Green Marine produced the detail engineering at the demanded quality, the responsiveness to problem solving and last-minute changes, the collaborative-engineering attitude and the level of complete control and management shown in marine operations. The HSE was also outstanding.”

Ben Cutler, Microsoft’s Natick Project Manager said:

“Project Natick reflects Microsoft’s ongoing quest for cloud datacentre solutions that offer less resource intensive options, rapid provisioning, lower costs, and high agility in meeting customer needs. Microsoft was pleased to have Green Marine on our team to safely deliver the data centre to its new home on the Scottish seafloor.”

Further to the efforts of the Green Marine team, the success of this offshore installation was due to careful planning and working closely with the other project partners – Naval Energies, Naval Group, Microsoft and EMEC, throughout the project.
